The problem is we are trying to learn too many principles at the same time. At every given time God is trying to make you change one major thing, as Jesus said, "only one thing is needful"

We therefore know many things but have learnt very little. With more knowledge nothing really has changed.

On this joke-slap matter, I think that if the joke is so funny to instigate a good laugh from you about your wife, then the slap is just an afterthought..sign of a deeper problem.

Go home and apologise to her for laughing that way and finding the joke funny in the first place.

There's a diff btw transforming into the image of Christ and transforming into modern christianity. The former can't be faked; requires a deep work of the spirit & mortification while the latter from hanging out with church folks, enjoying church trends and church programmes etc.
