Happy Birthday
on 20th September 2019, my girlfriend told me her mum had asked her to come home for a family wedding in accra. i didn’t think twice about it. i even helped her pack, drove her to the station, and stayed until her bus moved. that’s how supportive I was. six hours passed. no call. no text. not even “i’ve arrived.” it was strange, so I decided to call her mum just to be sure she got home safely. her mum picked up and the first thing she asked was, “how is my daughter? i haven’t heard from her in days.” my heart literally paused. this girl told me her mum said she should come home… so why is her mum asking me about her? but I didn’t want to start any drama, especially because her dad would’ve turned the whole thing into a disaster. so I lied and told her mum,“oh she’s fine, she’ll call you soon.” later that evening, my girlfriend finally texted me,“baby I’m home. my phone went off, that’s why I couldn’t call.”
hmm. iasked casually if her mum was okay, and she responded confidently, “oh she’s fine. she even sends her greetings.” i just smiled in my head and let it slide. she said she was tired and was going to sleep. fine. no problem. but the whole weekend?
no call. no text. anytime I tried calling, her phone was “switched off.” i didn’t dare call her mum again since I’d already exposed myself with the first lie. then on sunday around 8:40 pm, she texted that she’d arrived in cape and wanted me to pick her up. so I drove over. the whole ride felt… off. she was glued to her phone, smiling and typing. but i didn’t want to jump to conclusions without proof. when we got home, she rushed to the kitchen to find something to eat. she left her phone on the centre table. suddenly it started buzzing. a call from “JJ,her ex.” my heart sunk. the call ended and immediately a message popped up: “i want to know if you’ve reached his place safely. call me when you can… and thank you for an amazing weekend.” brothers and sisters… tears rolled down my face before i even realised. the betrayal pain hits different when you’re in your own house. but I didn’t confront her. i acted like I hadn’t seen anything. two weeks later, we were lying down watching a movie, and i calmly asked:
“so what were you doing with JJ the weekend you told me you were going for a wedding?” immediately her heartbeat changed. she got up from my lap and tried to play dumb, claiming she was with her mum the whole weekend and didn’t know what I was talking about. i told her, “okay. no problem. i’ll call your mum and dad right now and ask them.” that was when the truth started leaking. she broke down crying that she actually went to meet JJ, “just to catch up as friends.” she said she lied because she knew I wouldn’t allow her to go and she “really wanted to go.” she swore nothing happened. she claimed they slept in separate rooms. me, I just listened quietly. we had a microbiology exam coming up, so I didn’t want any chaos. i simply told her to pack her things and go back to her hostel because i needed space. she cried. she begged.
but I was done. right in the middle of her begging, guess who called? yes… JJ. at that point, I just ordered a bolt ride for her. after our exam, i broke up with her officially. no shouting. no insults. just peace.
