The Other Side of the Coin: The Untold Truth About Cyprus
History is not merely a narrative shaped by one voice.
For decades, the narrative surrounding the Cyprus issue has predominantly echoed one perspective—that of the Greek Cypriots. But how often have we paused to examine the other side of the coin? Cyprus, an island located just 71 kilometers off Türkiye’s southern coast yet 900 kilometers from Greece, has been at the center of contention since the mid-20th century. Its strategic importance and rich history have rendered it a stage for political ambitions and violent conflicts.
From 1950 onward, the Greek Cypriot campaign for ENOSIS, the unification of Cyprus with Greece, set the stage for years of unrest. Under the guise of this nationalist goal, armed militias such as EOKA were established, targeting not only British colonial forces but also the island’s Turkish population. Greek Cypriots, driven by their desire for dominance, unleashed a campaign of violence that escalated into systematic oppression and ethnic cleansing against Turkish Cypriots.
The Dark Days: Violence, Oppression, and the Fight for Survival
The situation worsened in 1963 when Greek Cypriots attempted to amend the 1960 Constitution, undermining the political rights of Turkish Cypriots. When Turkish Cypriots rejected these proposals, the Greek Cypriot leadership launched systematic attacks in what came to be known as Bloody Christmas. Backed by the infamous Akritas Plan, a blueprint for ethnic cleansing, these atrocities forced tens of thousands of Turkish Cypriots to flee their homes. By 1964, over 30,000 Turkish Cypriots were displaced, confined to isolated enclaves that covered just 3% of the island.
In the face of annihilation, Turkish Cypriots took matters into their own hands, forming the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) to defend their communities. Despite Türkiye's repeated warnings and diplomatic overtures to the international community, these pleas were met with indifference, emboldening the Greek Cypriots to escalate their violent campaign.
The Cyprus Peace Operation: A Historic Step Towards Justice
The year 1974 marked an unforgettable turning point for Turkish Cypriots. The coup, led by Nikos Sampson with the support of the junta regime in Greece, aimed to annex the island entirely to Greece. This coup posed a grave threat not only to the Turkish Cypriots but also to the Greek Cypriots themselves. The dream of ENOSIS plunged the island into complete chaos. Exercising its rights as a guarantor, Türkiye initiated the Cyprus Peace Operation in full compliance with international law.
The operation, which began on July 20, 1974, was not merely a move to protect Turkish Cypriots but also an effort to establish sustainable peace between the two communities on the island. The Turkish Armed Forces swiftly halted the massacres and provided safe zones for Turkish Cypriots. For a people subjected to years of oppression and violence by Greek Cypriots, this operation was a gateway to freedom. Yet, the international community, instead of recognizing the legitimate nature of this intervention, unjustly labeled it as an "invasion," willfully ignoring the facts.
The Birth of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus: A Guarantee of Sovereignty and Peace
Following the operation, efforts were made to find a peaceful solution on the island. However, the Greek side's persistent refusal to engage constructively in negotiations compelled the Turkish Cypriots to exercise their right to self-determination. On November 15, 1983, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was proclaimed. The existence of the TRNC not only defends the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot people but also stands as a pillar of peace and stability on the island.
Though the TRNC remains unrecognized to this day, this fact cannot overshadow the legitimacy of the Turkish Cypriots' struggle. The ongoing isolation and embargoes imposed on the TRNC are in blatant violation of international law and basic human rights. Yet, the Turkish Cypriot people, with Türkiye’s unwavering support, continue to stand resilient against all odds.
The Stain on the International Community’s Conscience
The Cyprus issue is one of the most striking examples of the double standards of the international community. While turning a blind eye to the Greek Cypriots’ genocidal attempts and systematic assaults on the island, the world has unfairly criticized Türkiye's lawful intervention. The international community’s track record on this matter, as we are witnessing today in similar situations, is known to all.
Today, we ask Europe: Do you have the courage to look at the other side of the coin? Is it not time to acknowledge the suffering and injustices endured by Turkish Cypriots throughout history? History is not merely a narrative shaped by one voice. Uncovering the truth is a duty bound by human dignity and responsibility.

🚨🇮🇱🇵🇸 BREAKING: ZIONIST ISRAELI soldiers caught RAPING Palestinian hostage.
The Palestinian hostage was hospitalized with injuries such as a torn rectum, broken ribs & ruptured bowels.
