No one argues that because France once fought England, China could show up, wipe them both out, and call Paris "unclaimed."

What existed in North America was shifting borders, shared hunting grounds, treaties, diplomacy, and conflict between peoples who all belonged to the land.

What arrived with Europe was something categorically different:

Permanent settler rule.

Mass displacement.

Forced marches.

Boarding schools.

Legal doctrines that declared Native people "extinct" on paper so their land could be seized.
