#EUHumanitarianAid
Today in Brussels, I met with EU 🇪🇺 Commissioner @HadjaLahbib at the Conference on the Protection of Humanitarian Aid Workers.
As she emphasized, “There is no humanitarian aid without the people who deliver it.”
Protecting health and humanitarian workers is a shared priority.
Looking to 2027, we discussed strengthening cooperation, linking humanitarian aid with longer-term health investments, and exploring emerging needs in Central America, including migration, violence and food insecurity. Grateful for the EU’s continued partnership.
In Brussels, I met with Alberto Garralón of @eu_echo to review our longstanding partnership supporting PAHO’s humanitarian health response in Haiti, Venezuela and Cuba, including essential services, disease outbreaks and recent emergencies.

In Brussels, I met with Christian Burgsmueller of @eu_eeas to discuss shared priorities, building on 12 EU 🇪🇺 - funded health projects in the Americas and on how PAHO can support implement the EU–CELAC health commitments.
Cancer literacy plays an important role in prevention, early detection and informed decisions about care.
At #CancerLiteracyDay, hosted by @negrescuvictor at @Europarl_EN, I shared the perspective of the Americas, where cancer caused around 1.5 million deaths in 2024.
Making reliable information accessible is part of our response.
PAHO and @IARCWHO developed the Latin America and the Caribbean Code Against Cancer, with 17 evidence-based recommendations adapted to our Region to help people understand and reduce their cancer risk.
In Haiti, Venezuela and Cuba, EU support is important to PAHO’s humanitarian response.
We discussed protecting civilians, health workers and facilities, and sustaining health assistance in prolonged crises as the EU prepares its next long-term budget.
