In 822 a musician arrived in Córdoba from Baghdad and made a huge impact on the way the city dressed. Ziryab, born Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Nafi, arrived at the court of Abd al-Rahman II with a monthly salary of 200 gold dinars and within years had transformed how the Cordoban elite understood clothing, grooming, and the relationship between dress and time.

Before him, according to Al-Maqqari, drawing on earlier Andalusi chronicles, men and women of the court wore their hair long, parted in the middle, hanging loose to the shoulders. Ziryab cut his short, with bangs across the forehead. The court followed.

He introduced the idea that what you wore should change not just with temperature but with season, time of day, and occasion. Winter clothes were heavier and darker, furs for the wealthiest. Summer meant light linens and cottons in white and pale tones that deflected heat. Spring and autumn had their own intermediate registers, and morning dress was lighter and less formal than evening dress.

The seasonal wardrobe, something we now take for granted, was formalized in Córdoba first. The same networks that carried Andalusi silks, brocades, and textile terms as gifts, tribute, and trade into the Christian kingdoms of León and Castile carried these aesthetic conventions outward into the wider Latin-speaking world...
