When AP says the US should thank China

The world has China's "energy strategy to thank" for avoiding a "much worse" oil price shock. So wrote the Associated Press (AP) in a report on Saturday, saying that "we've been free-riding off Beijing in a weird way" and that the US should "thank" China. The lengthy report focused on the turmoil in global oil markets triggered by concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. It argued that China's forward-looking energy planning has enabled the country to withstand the pressure while easing global demand, thereby softening the upward price effects for the US, Europe and other regions.

At a time when much of the Western media is busy reviving the "China shock" narrative, this may be one of the more clear-eyed assessments of China to come from a mainstream US media outlet in quite some time.

China announced further progress in its push for a crewed moon landing by 2030, with its lunar spacesuit and a bed rest experiment for long-term space stays both advancing, the country's astronaut center said on Saturday:

- The development of China's moon-landing spacesuit Wangyu - meaning "gazing into the cosmos" - is progressing smoothly, with dozens of key technologies now in place. The lunar spacesuit is designed to be lightweight, miniaturized, highly efficient and safe.
- The country is also advancing astronaut health research, with the "Dixing-3" bed rest experiment completed. The experiment launched in May aimed to address physiological protection challenges for long-term space stays and crewed lunar landing missions. Results showed that the experiment effectively protects the human bone, muscle and cardiovascular systems, and it will provide technical support for long-term space stays and crewed lunar landing missions. China firmly opposes unilateral sanctions that lack authorization from the United Nations and a basis in international law, as well as so-called "secondary sanctions" targeting third countries, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said Saturday.

The remarks came in response to a question about the United States signing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 into law on Sept. 18 (U.S. Eastern Time). The legislation strengthens sanctions against Russia, extends sanctions related to Iran, and authorizes tariffs of up to 100 percent on certain third countries that import Russian oil or natural gas.

China has always conducted normal economic and trade cooperation with countries around the world on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, the spokesperson said, adding that such cooperation targets no third party and is not subject to interference or coercion by third parties.

Smart welding robots are empowering the construction of the Zhangjinggao Yangtze River Bridge, the world’s largest-span suspension bridge under construction.
