The escape wasn't a last-minute decision.

According to the FBI's investigation, the men spent months preparing. They fashioned tools from improvised materials and used a makeshift drill to enlarge openings around the ventilation grilles in their cells.

Behind those openings, they gained access to an unused utility corridor.

From there, they reached the prison roof and made their way outside the main cellhouse.

They also constructed a makeshift raft and life preservers from raincoats, using stitching and other materials to assemble equipment that might keep them afloat.

Meanwhile, they created dummy heads using papier-mâché-like materials and painted them to resemble their faces. They even used real human hair to make the decoys more convincing.

The plan required patience, secrecy, and careful timing.

When the guards finally discovered the empty cells, a massive search began. Authorities examined the island, the surrounding waters, and possible escape routes.

The men had left behind evidence of their preparation, but not enough to establish exactly what happened after they entered the bay.

And that became the central question.
