Pakistan’s minimum wage system has long relied on annual announcements that often fall short of ensuring real protection for workers. In a context of rising inflation, labour market informality, and growing household vulnerability, wage policy must evolve from symbolic notifications to a transparent, evidence-based governance framework.

In #PIDE latest Policy Viewpoint, Dr. Nadeem Javaid (@nadeemjavaid75) and Dr. S. M. Naeem Nawaz (@SMNaeemNawaz) propose a rules-based approach to minimum wage determination that balances worker welfare, purchasing power, productivity, affordability, and enforceability. The study recommends a national minimum wage benchmark of Rs. 45,000 per month for FY2026–27, supported by transparent methodology, provincial calibration, and stronger compliance mechanisms.

The authors argue that Pakistan does not simply need a higher minimum wage—it needs a credible minimum wage system that ensures notified wages translate into wages actually received by workers.

After one of the most rigorous and competitive research evaluation exercises in Pakistan’s policy research landscape, the @RASTA_PIDE – @PIDEpk & Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives (@PlanComPakistan), Competitive Grants Programme is pleased to announce 𝟑𝟗 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 under Round 8.0.

The process began with 1,712 Research Ideas received from across Pakistan and abroad, followed by a transparent multi-stage evaluation process involving:
(a) Stage 1 Double-blind Reviews
(b) Research Training Workshop
(c) Stage 2 Detailed Proposal Evaluations
(d) Review Workshop
(e) Final Awards Decision Meeting.

A total of 481 full proposals underwent detailed double-blind technical reviews, while 168 shortlisted teams presented their work before distinguished members of the RAC and policy experts. As a result, 39 Research Teams (around 8%) secured awards under CGP 8.0.

We congratulate all award-winning teams and appreciate the dedication of the RAC Members, reviewers, and the leadership of PIDE for ensuring a transparent, merit-based, and academically rigorous process. Loads of appreciation to all applicants who participated in the CGP 8.0 Round and contributed to strengthening Pakistan’s research and policy ecosystem through their ideas and submissions. The next round of RASTA Competitive Grants will be announced shortly, InshaAllah.

RASTA continues to strengthen Pakistan’s largest evidence-based policy research network by connecting researchers, universities, think tanks, practitioners, and policymakers for impactful national development research.
