The mother of the 16-year-old gunman responsible for Thursday’s horrific elementary school shooting in Bend, Oregon, is speaking out, insisting her son was a good boy despite the unimaginable violence that left four innocent people dead.

John J. Griffin II, 16, has been identified as the teenager who opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School on October 15, killing three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, along with a teacher. A 7-year-old student and another teacher, 54, were critically injured.

According to the New York Post, Griffin’s mother broke down in tears while discussing her son, describing him as a good boy and struggling to reconcile the child she knew with the horrific acts he allegedly committed.

But another disturbing detail has emerged about the weapon used in the massacre.

According to NBC News, two senior law enforcement officials confirmed that Griffin’s mother purchased the firearm he used in the shooting around his birthday in August, just two months before the attack.

The weapon was reportedly a pump-action shotgun.

Authorities have not publicly established whether the firearm was specifically intended as a birthday gift or explained how Griffin gained access to it on the day of the shooting.

Investigators say the teenager arrived at Silver Rail Elementary shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday and began firing. He reportedly shot through locked school doors to force his way inside, where children and teachers were going about their normal school day.

Among those killed was 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, a kindergartener whose family is now preparing to bury their little boy instead of watching him grow up.

Two other children, ages 8 and 11, and a teacher also lost their lives.

The massacre might have claimed even more victims if not for the actions of 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, a local father whose two daughters attend the elementary school.

Giamanco was reportedly driving home during his lunch break when he heard gunfire. Armed with a legally carried concealed weapon, he pursued the teenager into the school and fatally shot him, bringing the rampage to an end.

Despite being credited with saving lives, Giamanco is reportedly struggling emotionally with what happened and does not consider himself a hero.

Meanwhile, investigators are examining Griffin’s electronic devices, internet searches and social media activity to determine whether he had an interest in previous mass shootings or other acts of violence.

Authorities have not announced a motive or established whether Griffin had any personal connection to Silver Rail Elementary School.

While Griffin’s mother remembers him as a good boy, four families are now mourning loved ones who will never come home.

Saylor, who uses a wheelchair and already lives with significant medical challenges, was inside the classroom when 16-year-old Griffin J. John II opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing three children and a 25-year-old teacher.

Saylor survived.

And tonight, there is some encouraging news.

According to the Bend Police Department’s latest update, Saylor received lifesaving treatment at the scene and is now hospitalized at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where she remains in serious but stable condition.

This little girl and her family were already fighting battles long before a gunman entered her classroom.

According to a GoFundMe established to support her recovery, Saylor has numerous existing medical needs. Her parents are both self-employed, and caring for their daughter has already significantly limited their ability to work.

Now they’re facing an unimaginable additional burden.

Hospital expenses. Travel. Lodging. Lost income. And the uncertainty of what Saylor’s recovery will require in the weeks and months ahead.

Griffin J. John II, 16, shot the glass out of a locked side door at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon on Thursday and forced his way in. About a minute earlier he'd fired into a car in the parking lot.

He walked into the first classroom he reached. A special-needs room. Three kids, ages 5, 8 and 11, and their 25-year-old teacher were killed, all of them in that one class.

He knew the room. Back in 2020 he was a special-ed student at Silver Rail himself, in a program for kids with intensive behavioral and social challenges. Relatives say he'd been taught in the same classroom he opened fire in.

The gun was a Maverick 88 pump 12-gauge. His mother bought it in August, around his birthday. He brought nearly 60 shells and fired about 15 before Kaylub Giamanco, a dad on his lunch break with two girls at the school, chased him in and shot him dead.

Oregon makes you 18 to buy a shotgun. A parent can legally hand one to a minor. His mother's cooperating with police and hasn't been charged.
