Hovering from afar while #SIGIR2023#DC students share lessons learned from their day. Thank you again @debforit , mentors & students. Extra shout to @mdekstrand for sharing pics & whatsApping questions when Zoom was not cooperating 😉 @SIGIRConf
Going to #SIGIR2023? @mdekstrand will be on-site presenting 2 short papers: one on gender-specializing query reformulation by the newly-minted Dr. @RajAmifa with @UnderdogGeek & Nick Craswell, and one on inference led by Ngozi Ihemelandu.
Today I successfully defended my PhD! I am really grateful to have @mdekstrand as my advisor throughout this journey and I want to thank my committee members @DrCh0le , @serraedoardo, and Dr. Kennington for their feedback.
Thank you so much Dr. Sole @DrCh0le. I can't appreciate you enough for everything you have done for me. You have always been source of encouragement for me.
I met @RajAmifa early on her PhD journey. She was part of @PIReTship, took my #IR classes, & today I was on her PhD defense committee-I got a front row seat to seeing the transformation into the scientist she is today. Congrats Dr Raj & big remote hug to her advisor @mdekstrand
For the past year, @j_neidhardt & I met almost weekly to plan for #UMAP2023...what a treat that our last pre conference meeting was finally in person ! @UMAPconf
My post has the gif 🤭, @mdekstrand the lessons learned. ..and that was at the core of @PIReTship : the blending of styles for deeper reflections #acabesties

It's true — today was the last PIReT meeting. It's been a great 7 years with many successful students, great research, and good friends. We have more things in the pipeline (and @mdekstrand & @DrCh0le certainly aren't done collaborating), but an era is concluding.
After 7 seasons, today we wrapped the last episode of the @PIReTship 🥺 @mdekstrand & I built this group & we could not be prouder of all the milestones we shared together! we grew as researchers/ mentors with every step (& disagreement 🤣)
Excited to share that our short paper "Patterns of gender-specializing query reformulation" got accepted @SIGIRConf . This is the outcome of the work during my internship at Microsoft. #sigir2023.
Thank you @UnderdogGeek, @nick_craswell, and @mdekstrand for your guidance.
Stoked about our #TikTok and mental health paper for #chi23, with my PhD student @Owlslee13! TikTok interacts with people, mental health, and the FYP- it raises awareness but can be a runaway train of harmful content that users feel they can't escape. PDF: https://t.co/rjNQja3o9R
One of the many things I love about academia: I can listen to a presentation about a framework used for detecting anomalies in data from a Mars rover and see a potential use within the completely different domain of children's IR.
Science is cool!
Very pleased to announce that FAccTRec is back for #RecSys2023! More details to come, but for this year's edition in Singapore we especially encourage people doing work on on responsible search and recommendation in Asia-Pacific contexts to submit.
