#StopMisuseOfSCSTAct | Do you know about Vishnu Tiwari, who spent 20 yrs in jail in a false SC/ST Act case?

In Sept 2000, 23-year-old Vishnu Tiwari from Silawan village in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, was booked under IPC Section 376 and the SC/ST Act after a village dalit woman accused him of rape. The Allahabad High Court later noted that there was a land dispute between the parties, which provided a motive for the case.

A district court convicted Vishnu in 2003 and sentenced him to 10 years for rape and life imprisonment under the SC/ST Act. His appeal remained unheard for 16 years.

In January 2021, the Allahabad High Court acquitted him, noting the three-day delay in the FIR, absence of injuries and lack of medical evidence supporting forcible intercourse.

Vishnu walked out of prison in March 2021 after spending two decades behind bars. During his imprisonment, his parents and two brothers died, and he could not attend their funerals. His family had sold their house, land and cattle for legal expenses. He reportedly walked out with just Rs 600 and no family home to return to.

I ask again: where is the new school building that you promised? Shifting children to another school kilometres away, inconveniencing them and their families, is your solution?

One single western commode from the Sheesh Mahal could have funded a new school building. Focus on your priorities. Now go to Fazilka and apologise to the children and make a new building for them in their village immediately.

A crime that must be retold every year so our daughters remain vigilant. Ajmer 1992: How 1,100 Hindu girls were targeted, blackmailed and rped.

1. In 1992 one of the most appalling cases of targeted gang rpes was revealed in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Around 1,100 Hindu girls were gangrped over several months by a group led by Farooq Chishti, the khadim of Ajmer Sharif Dargah.

2. Hindu girls aged 12-20 years were rped by Farooq Chishti and blackmailed. Farooq is a direct descendant of Moinuddin Chisti, a medieval Sufi with deep-seated hatred towards Hindus.

3. The victims included daughters of IAS and IPS officials and businessmen. They were girls from schools and colleges across Ajmer. 6 victims committed suicide. Several others moved out. Survivors were threatened and most of them did not become witnesses.

4. The gang leader Farooq was not only the khadim (caretaker) of Ajmer Sharif Dargah, he was also the then President of Indian Youth Congress Ajmer.

5. Although the police and administration were aware of the gangrpe and blackmail of Hindu girls, they did not take any action against the criminals.

6. The investigation stalled due to political pressure and parental shame.

7. The incident was never reported by mainstream media. It was first reported by Deenbandhu Chaudhry, a journalist working with a local newspaper. Only when the incident was reported with photographs and people in Ajmer hit the roads did the police register an FIR.

8. Chaudhry was later murdered under "mysterious conditions".

9. Another reporter Madan Singh was threatened for writing extensively about the matter. Madan was shot but managed to flee. He was rushed to the JLN Hospital in Ajmer. Later, a gang of 6 assailants murdered him in the hospital.

10. Photos and videos used to blackmail the victims helped identify the accused and build the case against them.

11. Thirty victims were identified in the investigations; only a dozen filed cases, and ten later backed out. Only 2 girls pursued the case.

12. Dozens of men from Ajmer Sharif Dargah were involved.

13. Main accused Farooq Chishtee was president of the Ajmer Youth Congress. Nafis Chishtee was the vice-president of Ajmer Indian National Congress and Anwar Chishtee was the joint secretary of Ajmer Indian National Congress.

14. Moijullah alias Puttan, Ishrat Ali, Anwar Chishtee and Shamshuddin were sentenced by the court. Absconder Suhail Chishtee hid for 26 years before he surrendered. Absconder Salim Chishtee was arrested in 2012. Another main accused, Almas, is still absconding and is reportedly hiding in the US.

15. In 2013, the Rajasthan High Court upheld the decision though it reduced the period of the sentence from life imprisonment to the period already served.

16. In 2004, N Santosh Hegde and BP Singh of the Supreme Court said: "We are of the view that the ends of justice would be met if the sentence is reduced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment." 10 years for destroying 1,100 Hindu girls and their families.

17. According to Hindus Persecuted: "The point is not to open the past wounds or create a divide. It is for people to know their history, their persecutions and be aware of dangers still lurking around."

18. As seculars did after The Kashmir Files, it is easy to label everything as conspiracy or bigotry. But that does not deliver justice to victims.

19. Our political establishment, media, historians, intellectuals have not only failed us, but systematically whitewashed and hid the past from us to suit their agenda. It is time public discussions on these events happen without inhibition.

20. And before you lowlife liberals say this was just a crime and that Hindus are bringing religion into it, know this: NONE of the 1,100 victims was Muslim, not a SINGLE ONE. What are the odds?

21. Most of the victims in the case are now mothers or grandmothers. For them, the verdicts have no meaning. The perpetrators got light sentences because after all, rpists deserve to live too.
