In light of yesterday's #NewYearHonours announcements, my paper in SEPP exploring resilience and thriving in high achievers across 11 performance domains (many of whom were recognised in the Queen's Honours List) might be of interest. https://t.co/9x6vDtSKbQ
Congrats to our Senior Hurling performance coach and Na Piarsaigh club man Pat McCarthy and his partner Rebecca on their engagement over the weekend. 🥳
My context. There is a measure we tracked for Pat Gilroy and the Players the “Tackle” and went after it every year, Jim developed it into the U-21’s in parallel to Pats time with the Seniors and when JG took the Seniors it became the measure “Effort” as it encompassed a non-exhaustive range of actions by a player that was designed to make your opponent do what they don’t want to, limit their progress and where possible turn the ball over. The contingent parts included Tackle, Hook (in hurling), Block, Screen, Trap, Cut and so on. Most of the time I still refer to it as “Tackle” as that is at the Effort stats foundation. We tracked this for literally years and if the team could get over the key threshold (number one) and win the “tackle Count” (number two) the team did not lose (heck, lots of people will have issue with this and won’t believe it, I understand their view). I now, as a pass time, track the Effort in games I watch. Limerick are the team who tops the Effort count for hurling in the most recent years, yesterday their count was up on where they were, yet very narrowly (3.23%) overtaken by Cork. This was the best and second best “effort” performance of the year - add to that a 2% difference in Shot Conversion Cork 64% Limerick 62% ( from @sourceofscore ) it gives me some context of just how good Corks Performance was. For me the 5 in a row is an outcome, getting into the All-Ireland Final is an outcome and this Limerick generation don’t strike me as a group that are outcome focused and no team should be. Cork got a brilliant performance, Limerick also got a brilliant performance, more than that no one can ask for. A well deserved break for Limerick and then regroup, everyone together back at it next year and for Cork, target a better performance the next day.

@kearney_phil Very interesting, Phil. I’d be interested in your thoughts on responsibility. At what point does a coach take/pass responsibility for a player not following instructions? Is there a technique you teach to help a coach evaluate their communication effectiveness?
@ULConfession There are lecturers in UL who have very good engagement and attendance.
I had @stephenkinsella for economics. He asked students questions on the content covered to get their feedback. That’s one reason I thought he was a good lecturer. I can guarantee his lecture hall is busy.
@ULConfession This tweet is a good example of the disconnect between poor lecturers and students.
My experience is that 95% of UL students are interested, hard working and ambitious. Otherwise they wouldn’t be in University.
I work with four of them in Groody CarryOut

Anxiety and decision making often go hand in hand but there is some good news.
You’ll be most anxious about a decision when trying to decide between two good options (worth reminding yourself?)
Psychologists refer to it as a win-win paradox.
