Just like the "#AI whisperer" was a hot new job title, the hottest new job is "head of AI."

In this article, @ranimolla explores why the biggest companies around the world are hiring AI leadership as fast as they can.

Gartner's @PeterKrensky put it this way, "This is the biggest deal of the decade, and it’s ridiculously overhyped."

Krensky estimates that currently about a 1/4 of Fortune 2000 companies have dedicated AI leadership at the VP level or above. He expects it to be about 80% a year from now.

My friend @conorgrennan sees an opportunity to add value across the company by thinking creatively and bigger.

“You don’t need to know the software running your iPhone, just order an Uber,” Grennan said. Instead, what’s important for the role, he says, is creativity with language and breadth.

“They need to be an excellent communicator, they need to have a view of the entire firm, at least at the 30,000-foot view. And also it has to be somebody who really understands what generative AI can do,” Grennan said. “You don’t capture everything by putting it in the tech department.”

He's right.

The intuitive way to use AI and #GenerativeAI is to automate existing processes or to perform existing tasks, better, faster, cheaper, at scale.

The other way, the harder way, is to reimagine processes in an AI-first world, to rethink work itself, to do what you couldn't do before AI.

This sets the stage for an #augmentedenterprise and the era of #exponentialbusiness.

Here's Steve Jobs basically predicting the role of #AI in our lives. It's a balance of not just automation, but also augmentation. It's not just about making our work better, faster, more efficient, less costly. It about unlocking capabilities we didn't have or could achieve before.

"We are fashioning a 21st-century bicycle that can amplify inherent intellectual ability that man has and take care of drudgery to free people to do more creative work." – Steve Jobs

He described personal computing as the 'bicycle for our minds.' This rings truer today as AI is starting to augment our intelligence and work.

In my work, I call this the era of the #exponentialbusiness.
