A deeply unfortunate incident occurred at IIT Bombay where a 20-year-old student, Sahil Wakode, ended his life. The IIT administration had initially alleged that he used a mobile phone and ChatGPT during an examination. The administration later apologized, acknowledging that it was inappropriate to make this allegation public before the investigation was complete. Meanwhile, Sahil's family has alleged caste-based harassment; a case has been registered regarding these allegations, and an investigation is underway. The professors involved have also presented their side of the story. Amidst all this, a young man has been lost, yet no one seems to be discussing the reason why he felt compelled to resort to suicide.

If a student engages in malpractice during an exam, it is indeed the professors' duty to stop them and act in accordance with the rules. However, it is not right to brand a deceased student a wrongdoer before the allegations have been proven. Similarly, it is inappropriate to declare the professors guilty simply because an allegation of caste-based harassment has been made, without the inquiry being concluded. Yet, none of this is being considered. This is because, by bringing the issue of 'caste' to the forefront in these matters, no one wants to discuss or reflect on why a twenty-year-old youth might have felt, after a single incident, that all avenues in his life seem to have closed.

I have often stated in my speeches that since the year 2000, casteism has become so rampant in Maharashtra that people have started identifying the caste of the student sitting next to their child in class, and office colleagues who have shared meals together for years have begun viewing one another through the prism of caste. This poison has spread to such an extent that it has now reached the IITs. It is truly tragic that in the very IITs, institutions Pandit Nehru described as the "temples of modern India", a student has committed suicide, and the fact that this tragedy was driven by caste issues has come to the fore, overshadowing the simple, heartbreaking reality that we have lost a fellow human being.

Fundamentally, whether it is the IIT entrance or any preceding competitive exam, the process has become cutthroat. Lakhs of students vie for a mere few hundred seats; once selected, they face the crushing burden of academics followed by the anxiety surrounding campus placements. Moreover, whether at IITs or IIMs, campus placements no longer guarantee the lucrative salaries they once did. This sense of despair is not limited to IIT students alone; it is pervasive, affecting everyone from Commerce and Arts students to doctors and engineers. Sahil took his own life amidst this very despair. This raises a crucial question: should we challenge and reform an education system that has completely crumbled, or should we instead fixate on the caste of the student who committed suicide and of the person who questioned him?

The issue is not about which specific government is in power. Over the past 30 to 40 years, in the pursuit of commercializing education, we have caused immense damage to the entire Indian education system; radical changes are needed to address this. Just as it seemed that the recent 'Gen Z' movement was marking the beginning of such a shift, this new incident has emerged. I urge the students to remember that your movement garnered nationwide support because it focused on finding solutions to systemic flaws. Your movement must continue along this same path. If it does, the government will be compelled to answer difficult questions and take concrete action. Does the government intend to do so? If yes, that is excellent; if not, they always have the potent weapons of caste and religion at their disposal. Once the issues of caste and religion are introduced, it becomes easy to derail the conversation. Do not get drawn into such distractions.
