Staggering growth in India’s Defence Production

A giant leap has taken place in the indigenous defence production in the FY 2025-26 by staggering increase in the defence production from ₹ 1.54 lakh crore to ₹ 1.78 lakh crore, registering a net increase of 15.6% over the previous fiscal year.

With the record increase in the indigenous production a huge momentum has been achieved in India’s defence production and marching towards #AatmanirbharBharat.

Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has lauded the efforts of Department of Defence Production and all stakeholders involved in the defence production of the country. Raksha Mantri has called for continued acceleration in the defence production sector with increased private sector participation and growing export capabilities.

India’s growth story in the defence sector has made many milestones during the last decade. A big theme has been launched, shifting from “Buyer” to “Builder” in defence equipment. Indigenous defence production has risen to ₹1.78 Lakh crore in the FY 2025-26, almost four times increase from FY 2013-14.
Further, India’s defence export has touched an all time high of ₹38,424 crore during the FY 2025-26, more than 5500% from FY 2013-14. Our defence equipment are being exported to more than 80 countries.

Driven by the vision of #AatmanirbharBharat, Innovators/MSMEs are transforming concepts into battlefield-ready realities.
Emerging as a revolution, nurturing 680 Start-ups/Innovators join defence innovation ecosystem. Over 17,000 MSMEs now form the backbone of India's indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem. In order to prioritise indigenisation, five Positive Indigenisation lists of over 5000 defence items of DPSUs have been notified and offered to the industries including MSMEs and Start-ups for manufacturing.

DRDO successfully conducted the flight-test of the indigenously developed Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. Emerging as a revolution, nurturing 680 Start-ups/Innovators join defence innovation ecosystem with 556 contracts signed; received 68 clearances for procurement; and 51 procurement contracts worth Rs 2,659 crores signed through iDEX.
Over 17,000 MSMEs now form the backbone of India's indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

DPSUs in collaboration with emerging startups across its business verticals, harnessing their innovation and recognizing their valuable contributions towards building Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing. DPSUs through Apprenticeship Training, PM Vishwakarma, PM Internship Scheme, Centres of Excellence, Vocational Training Centres, and On-the-Job training have turned potential into purpose, and skills into sustainable livelihoods for youth.
