Nicola Tanzi (64) held a gate open for David Mazariegos (25). In response, Mazariegos brutally beat Nicola for 10 minutes, kicking and stomping on his head, before robbing him.

Mazariegos has a long rap sheet with at least 33 prior arrests, including both sealed and unsealed cases, and is listed on the city’s transit recidivist database. Just a few months before this incident, he was arrested for assault. The judge didn’t want to release him but acted according to the law after prosecutors downgraded the charges from a felony to a misdemeanor.

He now faces two counts of murder, as well as robbery and grand larceny charges.
