"if you’re in the #fossilfuel business, you’re in the #fire business, which means you’re in the #CO2 business, which means you’re part of the problem, aiding and abetting global #climate disruption that is, right now, endangering millions of lives. #Oil https://t.co/UD8txwLOQV
July has already seen:
The hottest three-week period ever recorded.
The three hottest days on record.
The highest-ever ocean temperatures for this time of year.
It is still possible to avoid the very worst of climate change, but only with dramatic, immediate #ClimateAction.
BC is ignoring upstream fracking pollution when assessing LNG projects. Current two approved projects would result in total oil and gas sector emissions in 2030 that are double the sectoral emissions target. Net zero? Not so much #bcpoli https://t.co/dUCEA17xRy
The fossil fuel industry gets 11 million dollars in subsidies every single minute: https://t.co/a9XupnWn2k
How many more disasters does it take before we stop funding the problem? #ActOnClimate#ClimateEmergency#climate#energy#GreenNewDeal
An extraordinary marine heatwave has developed off the east coast of Canada, with hundreds of thousands of square miles of ocean experiencing sea surface temperatures more than 5°C (9°F) above normal and max anomalies approaching 10°C (18°F) above normal.
Thermal stress from this marine heatwave could have major impacts on marine life in the Northwest Atlantic.
No government will ever admit “our country is now unliveable”. Power grids have already become as strategically important as food in uninhabitable countries. If the AC goes, it is instant death for millions #uninhabitable#ClimateBreakdown
The North Atlantic is in uncharted territory.
The entire ocean basin is a record-smashing 1.5°C above normal, as millions of square miles of ocean experience strong to severe marine heatwaves.
Off the coast of Canada, ocean temperatures are up to 9°C (16°F) above average!
These record-warm temperatures are already having devastating impacts on marine ecosystems. In Florida, water temperatures have soared as high as 98°F (36.7°C), with coral bleaching ongoing and expected to rapidly ramp up throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean in the coming weeks.
Record-warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic will also fuel potentially stronger hurricanes and a more active hurricane season. More heat in the ocean equals more energy, increasing the upper limit of hurricane strength and thus exponentially increasing the damage potential of storms.
For example, a 110 mph Category 2 hurricane has over 2x the damage potential of a 100 mph Category 2 storm.
With over a month until water temperatures typically peak, the North Atlantic is just 0.1°C away from tying the all-time record for its highest ocean temperature (set last year), which it will inevitably break in the coming days.
The 7 hottest days on Earth in the last 100,000+ years all happened in the last week:
July 6 ~ 17.23°C / 63.01°F
July 7 ~ 17.20°C / 62.96°F
July 4 ~ 17.18°C / 62.93°F
July 5 ~ 17.18°C / 62.92°F
July 8 ~ 17.17°C / 62.90°F
July 10 ~ 17.12°C / 62.81°F
July 9 ~ 17.11°C / 62.79°F
Every fraction of a degree counts.
Rising temperatures put marine life and coastal ecosystems at risk of irreversible loss.
Urgent #ClimateAction is needed to #SaveOurOcean.
Your plan doesn’t stop glaciers from melting, rivers /lakes drying up. Or save agriculture from drought and extreme heat. Or forests burning and wild creatures dying. Or oceans warming to the point sea life die. STOP subsidizing oil&gas, stop building pipelines! @JustinTrudeau
🌍🔥🌪️🌊 As Canada faces extreme weather events, we're launching the first-ever #NationalAdaptationStrategy to protect our communities and build a resilient future in the face of climate change. https://t.co/k7iVOEXVqW
It's more difficult to access Paxlovid in B.C. than almost anywhere else in N. America. In N.B., anyone over 18 can access it. In Ontario, those 18+ can access it if they haven't had a covid vaccination in the previous 6mo.
B.C. must stop gatekeeping this life-saving drug.
To have any chance of keeping global termperature rise below 1.5 °C we must protect forests.
If they go, they're taking us with them. Protect the irreplaceable.
