Why MCQ exams are deeply flawed

Multiple choice questions (MCQs) are a popular type of assessment because they are quick and easy to grade. However, there are a number of problems with MCQs as a measure of understanding.

MCQs can be easily guessed. If students have some knowledge of the material, they may be able to guess the correct answer even if they do not fully understand the concept. This is especially true if the distractors are poorly written or if there is only one or two words that distinguish the correct answer from the distractors. It's easy to game them.

MCQs do not assess critical thinking skills. MCQs typically require students to select the correct answer from a list of choices. This does not require students to think critically about the material or to apply their knowledge to new situations.

MCQs can be biased. MCQs can be biased in a number of ways, such as by using culturally loaded language or by favoring one particular way of thinking over another.

MCQs can be boring. MCQs can be repetitive and boring for students to complete. This can lead to students not taking the assessment seriously or not putting in their best effort.

Despite these problems, MCQs can be a useful tool for assessment in some cases. For example, MCQs can be used to assess basic knowledge or to assess students' understanding of factual information. However, it is important to be aware of the limitations of MCQs and to use them in conjunction with other assessment methods, such as essays and projects, to get a more complete picture of student learning.
