Now, people will jump on the fact that Cristiano was my player. He was. He is still my boy in many ways. I have huge affection and respect for him, the hunger, the work rate, the way he rebuilt himself season after season. That part is emotional for me. But the ranking itself is no longer emotional. It’s factual. You separate the personal from the professional when the evidence is this clear.

Let’s be honest about what Cristiano is. He is the more adaptable, all-round player. Different leagues, different systems, different styles of play. He could score with either foot, with his head, from distance, from six yards. He could lead a dressing room, he could carry a team on pure willpower, and he stayed at the highest level for an absurd length of time. No serious person denies any of that. Physical dominance, leadership, versatility — he has those qualities in abundance.

But adaptable is not the same as greatest. In pure footballing terms — the genius of the first touch, the vision, the consistency at the absolute peak for over a decade, and now the complete trophy case — Messi is on another level. Ronaldo is not close in that specific sense. One is an extraordinary athlete and competitor who maximised every ounce of his talent. The other is simply a better footballer. That’s the distinction.

Pele and Maradona were gods of their eras, no question. But the modern game is harder, deeper, and more athletic. The athletic demands, the tactical organisation, the quality of opposition week after week, it’s a different beast. Messi dominated a far stronger era for longer than either of them managed. That has to be recognised.

I’m not sentimental about this. Sentiment is for fans and for the media and if I’m being honest , he made me question my job. Both times we faced him in the Champions League, I thought, ‘What do you even do against that?’ I’ve been in football a long time, but since I started coaching, I’ve never seen a creature like him. Absolutely unbelievable.”

When you strip it back to what actually happened on the pitch and in the trophy cabinet, the answer is clear.

Cristiano is an extraordinary athlete and competitor. Messi is just a better footballer. You can love Ronaldo more. You can respect him more. You can prefer his story, his personality, his work ethic. All of that is fair. What you cannot do is put him above Messi anymore. The ledger is closed.”
