As Kenya approaches the election period, many citizens are demanding accountability—but do we truly understand who is accountable for what?
At HOVUC, governance and accountability are more than just ideals; they are values we actively promote. We believe empowering citizens starts with knowledge. When people understand how government systems work, they are better equipped to demand transparency, efficiency, and justice.
Today, we begin by breaking down the County Government Structure—clarifying roles, responsibilities, and where accountability lies.
This knowledge is power.
We call upon educators, community leaders, youth champions, and anyone in a position of influence: take up the responsibility to educate others. Let this information reach every corner—from urban centres to grassroots communities.
An informed citizenry is the foundation of a just and accountable society.

Action Life, under the AMANI Tekelezi initiative, facilitated five impactful Economic Empowerment Awareness sessions across Mpeketoni, Witu, Mapenya, Hindi, and Mkunumbi. These sessions brought together 76 participants—66 youth and 10 women—creating a vibrant, inclusive platform for learning, reflection, and transformation.
What stood out most was not just the knowledge shared, but the honest conversations that emerged. Participants opened up about the realities of unstable incomes, the weight of financial uncertainty, and the frustration many young people face when opportunities feel out of reach. In these safe spaces, livelihoods were no longer just about survival—they became a pathway to dignity, stability, and peacebuilding.
Through practical and relatable sessions, participants were equipped with essential financial skills, including budgeting, saving, record-keeping, and managing small businesses. For many, this was their first exposure to structured financial planning—unlocking a new way of thinking about money and growth.
“𝘞𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺. 𝘕𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯, 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦.” – Joyce Maina, Konasor Group
The sessions also emphasized marketing and value addition, especially for those engaged in coconut-based and small-scale businesses. With support from peer coaches from BlueBiz youth groups, participants explored how to improve product quality, branding, and customer engagement—turning everyday hustle into strategic enterprise.
A critical highlight was the integration of Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) awareness. Through real-life scenarios, participants connected how economic vulnerability and frustration can make youth susceptible to manipulation and harmful influences. This powerful realization reframed economic empowerment as not just a financial goal, but a tool for protection, resilience, and community safety.
The sessions also created space for healing and emotional well-being. Conversations around trauma, stress, and personal struggles allowed participants—especially women—to share openly, support one another, and strengthen group cohesion.
By the end of the sessions, the shift was clear. Confidence had grown. Mindsets had changed. Hope had been restored. Groups began discussing joint business ventures, savings plans, and ways to support vulnerable youth within their communities.
“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴. 𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨—𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨.” – Janet Wairimu, Ubunifu Group
This is what empowerment looks like: informed minds, strengthened communities, and a shared vision for a better future.

Day 4 | TOT led #SheriayaVijana training on Leadership & Advocacy!
In today’s world, digital skills are no longer optional, and for young people working in #climate and #advocacy spaces, they have become a critical part of staying relevant, effective, and truly impactful in the work they do.
As our TOT-led trainings at YMCA Central come to a close, today’s first session, facilitated by Veronica Kahutu, focused on how #youngpeople can practically use AI and digital tools to strengthen their work across advocacy, business, and climate action spaces.
Breaking Down AI into Practical Use
Rather than approaching AI as a complex concept, the session simplified it into clear, usable skills that participants can apply immediately:
🔹Understanding how to communicate with AI through effective prompt writing
🔹 Structuring prompts by clearly defining goals, context, and expected outcomes
🔹 Improving results through follow-up questions and refinement
🔹 Using AI tools to support research, writing, and everyday productivity
Participants also explored commonly used tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Grammarly, and Microsoft Copilot, gaining a better understanding of how these tools can support their work when used intentionally.
Balancing Opportunity with Responsibility
The session also created space to reflect on the responsible use of AI, emphasising the importance of protecting personal and organisational data, being aware of bias in generated content, and verifying information before applying it in real-world contexts.
Why This Training Matters
As young people continue to take up space in climate and advocacy work, the ability to use digital tools effectively is becoming just as important as understanding #policy and systems, because it shapes how ideas are communicated, how work is organised, and how impact is scaled.
The Power of Youth-Led Learning
Through the #SheriayaVijana project, funded by European Union in Kenya, young people are being equipped with knowledge as well as being trusted to lead the learning process, creating a space where peers can learn from each other in ways that are more relatable, practical, and grounded in shared experiences.
By using a Training of Trainers model, the project is intentionally creating a ripple effect where knowledge does not remain within the training room but is passed on, expanded, and applied across different #communities, strengthening not just individual capacity but collective impact.

#YouthEmpowerment
In Tana River County, at Madogo Senior School and Mororo High School, conversations went beyond the classroom into awareness, courage and choice.
Led by @NCTC_Kenya, the sessions opened up real talk on staying alert, recognising suspicious behaviour, and navigating the risks of online recruitment and radicalisation.
There was reflection on responsibility, unity across faiths, and the role each student plays in looking out for the other.
From run, hide, fight…
to see something, say something…One message stood out,
they understand their role, and they are ready to protect it.
