Lal Chand has lived in Ajmer Central Jail for 33 months. An undertrial, he hasn’t been to court in 12 months due to the “non-availability” of police guards. Chand is confined in Barrack 1 of Ward 10 with 65 other prisoners.

The barrack has 5 fans — woefully inadequate, especially in summer — and no running water. The toilets and septic chambers are clogged.

I am a construction labourer. I was transferred to Sanganer open prison a few months ago because it is nearer to my home town. Previously I have stayed in the open prison at Bichwal: Shankarlal

I believe that this work must be done on a large scale and this should not be restricted to Rajasthan. Every state should promote and establish open prisons.

After my arrest in 2017 when I was taken to jail it was the first time I saw prison in real life.
