The Sanganer Open Prison experiment is on the verge of being abandoned despite the Supreme Court showing extraordinary interest in its success. #Openprison#SaveSanganerOpenPrison I explain the Rajasthan Government's compulsions in this piece for @thewire_in https://t.co/yH7qGyQ9um @PUCLindia@smitachakraburt
I am also proud of Paar for the way it has extended the framework of the release of prisoners in the time of the COVID pandemic. Our goal is to develop a better world where prisoners will not be looked down upon and Paar can do this.
Thereafter I visited the Sanganer Open Camp. I witnessed how families have been integrated and how prisoners are gaining the responsibility of community living in the Open Camp.
I was not aware of the concept called Open Prisons at all and in my mind prisons are places that I used to see in Bollywood movies. When I heard about the concept of Open Prisons I read about it and learned. I read the reports done by Paar on the advantages of Open Prisons.
I have been witnessing the terrific work done by Smita and the Paar team for quite some time. The work of Paar today has created a discourse about the Open prisons and prisoner’s rights as a whole across India.
Spent my life defending the principles of dignity, justice, equality, freedom. I have composed songs for the release of political prisoners. My song on Dr Binayak Sen brings back memories of the early ’70s when I witness students singing it in rallies today.
My song on the decade long fast of Irom Sharmila who also had to live under house arrest for years also speaks of freedom.
Therefore, when Smita started working inside prisons, I had to support her. Then when Paar was formed I was delighted to join.
Rajasthan now has 42 open prisons and it is the highest in the country. I wish that all the states look into this reform seriously as well and focus on building Open Prisons in their respective states.
And I think that it is absolutely imperative that Open Prisons should be built a lot more than Closed Prisons.
Based on the work of Paar now authorities are taking the concept of Open Prisons seriously and in Rajasthan 10 new Open Prisons have come up.
I am Susmit Bose, a social-change musician and trustee of Prison Aid and Action Research (PAAR).
My association with prisons has a long history. I have been part of civil rights movements across the world for decades.
“Most #offenders of this age bracket are #petty offenders. The #correctional justice system must focus on #counselling and skill development/ vocational training. ITI curriculum in prisons must be updated.”
-Smita Chakraburtty (Founder and CEO, #PAAR)
51% of #Rajasthan’s inmates fall within the #age bracket of 20-30 years. In this regard, Rajasthan is ahead of other large states (Madhya Pradesh – 49%, West Bengal- 44%, Bihar – 47%) in having this age demographics inside prisons.

@Paar_Org@Paar_Org the Supreme Court had directed for the establishment of quarantine (isolation) facilities, COVID-19 facilities as well as testing centres. Only six states (Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Assam and Telangana) have created separate establishments.
@Paar_Org@Paar_org PAAR received data from different prison departments on various directions given by the Supreme Court to prevent and mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 inside prisons.
On directions of the SC to be followed within #prison , #PAAR initiated #RTIs in Oct’20 for information on the status of their implementation, receiving data on directions given by the SC to prevent and mitigate the transmission of #COVID19 inside prisons.
