It is important to have parents and the scholar involved. Allow the scholar to express their concerns, and then come up with a learning plan that addresses their learning style. Make sure it is rigorous enough to attain learning goals.

@RutgersAltRoute Q5. I think that all involved need to know that they are cared about. The one bullying and the one being bullied. Let them know that this behavior is not acceptable, and that there are better ways to deal with life and its challenges. We are here to guide and develop.

@RutgersAltRoute Q4: The major challenge that I see with HIB is the amount of time it takes away from actual learning and creating. Scholars do not realize the amount of time that is taken away from their academic career, it often makes it difficult to recover or catch up.

@RutgersAltRoute A3: With my colleagues, I try not to make it a gossip session about our scholars. I ask questions such as did you talk to so and so, how was so and so in class today? Is there any additional information that we need to know that might be helpful to better assist so and so?

@RutgersAltRoute Q2. The steps that I have found to be effective is having news articles of teenagers that made bad choices and the severe consequences that follow. I use the term "Fast forward." Which means play out the scenario not just what feels good but potential consequences.

I do it early and often. Also, regularly reminding scholars of classroom rules and expectations.

@RutgersAltRoute A1: I try to model the type of behavior that is expected in my classroom. I treat all students with respect and dignity. I also remind them with a poster in my classroom, they often repeat my quote "when in doubt, just do the right thing!"
