People often ask me why I chose @93Alcatraz .

Of all the offers I could have accepted, all the places I could have gone, including the International Legion, why did I choose to work with men who came here from prison?

Maybe because, in some strange way, my entire life prepared me for them.

I was born while my mother was serving a prison sentence. The only reason I was born in a hospital was because she needed a C-section.

My father was an alcoholic. My mother struggled with drugs for most of my life.

The day before my 13th birthday, my mother was arrested for shooting my best friend’s dad.

He survived, but eventually I ended up in foster care.

So I learned very young that people are complicated.

That someone can make terrible choices and still be human.

That behind the moment the world uses to define someone forever, there can be an entire lifetime of trauma, addiction, violence, poverty, survival and bad decisions.

And it taught me something I have carried my entire life:

People are more than the worst thing they have ever done.

Maybe that is why I understand these men.

Hundreds of men have come from prison and volunteered to fight for Ukraine.

Men who had already lost their freedom were given another choice.

And they chose this.

They chose the uniform.

They chose their country.

They chose the men standing beside them.

They chose to put their lives on the line every single day.

Some have already given everything.

I have watched prisoners become soldiers.

I have watched men society had written off become men others trust with their lives.

I have watched them carry the wounded, protect their brothers under fire, find discipline, purpose, dignity and something they may never have had before:

A reason to believe their life could still mean something.

And somewhere along the way, they reminded me why second chances matter.

Because a prison sentence can tell you where a man has been.

It cannot tell you who he is capable of becoming.

Sometimes the man everyone gave up on becomes the man who runs back under fire for his brother.

Sometimes the man society decided had nothing left to give is the man willing to give everything.

That is why I chose this unit.

Not because I care less about where these men came from.

Because I care deeply about who they are choosing to become.

You cannot rewrite yesterday.

But you can decide what you do with tomorrow.

And the worst chapter of your life does not have to be the final one.
