Kevin Wiltse of western Kansas has made some major changes to make his operation more resilient in the face of drought.
One of those changes has been growing more forage on ground that would typically be planted to a grain crop.
A forage cover crop uses significantly less moisture than a grain crop and provides profit through grazing.
Kevin has also established native perennial grassland to diversify his forage options while maximizing water efficiency and soil health.
You can hear more of Kevin's story on our most recent episode of the Green Cover podcast: https://t.co/jTwfbxFV3T

@rockhillsranch@halterHQ We have had no issues with the system
Being able to sort
Grazed same amount of cornstalk acres from day 1 to day 135 on 24 hour moves
Calves are pretty much on a creep feeding program from the day they are born
Being able to graze first calf heifer and older cows 6 hours ahead
@CBKimbrell We have made them into silage over the past 25 years with adding straw or poor quality hay and has worked. The last one we made silage we piled them next to were we chop our surghum and mixed 3500 ton of each into the same pile and worked out extremely well
@walberg_chris@JerodMcDaniel Put the first collars on in may and have had no issues with them and have completely exceeded our expectations. It is changing the way we farm and grazing strategies and will have all the cows on a 24 or 12 hour rotation. Cow adapt quicker to the technology then the owners
Just this morning we used
@halterHQ@PerformanceBeef@CattleMax
Hopefully in the near future all these apps will be able to work together as one that would be a total game changer
@JerodMcDaniel More than likely the cow will go thru boundary and get her calf once she steps thru it doesn’t keep shocking her will use the vibration and sound to send her back into the virtual fence
@efino87 Embrace the technology I see this as a why to keep more of the younger generation to come back to the farm and ranch. If you have a chance to go to a field day and see how this is being implemented you will change your mind. The system more than pays for itself
@NickHorob We have been online since may and has exceeded our expectations and is changing how we graze and how we farm in the future also have used it to sort the early calving cows off corn stalks
