A complete shutdown of cold water ocean upwelling off the coast of Peru is the sign of a strong impending El Niño... It was along this coast that the phrase was first coined by colonial Spanish fishermen. This is a huge anomaly.
This system could dump a month’s worth of rain, definitely the last thing the north needs when the flood cleanup is still ongoing. Will be watching the tracking on this one carefully over the next few days…
🚨🌀We don't say this lightly - but this is looking like one of the most serious storms forecast for New Zealand so far this century.
The northern half of the North Island is especially exposed. Global modelling is highly aligned, but not 100% locked in.
#CycloneGabrielle
#BreakingNews: Tropical Cyclone #HALE (HAY-ILL) has formed and named by the Fiji Met Service.
The cyclone isn't likely to last long - perhaps only a day or two, mostly at sea. However, the left over depression is expected to reform & deepen in the #NewZealand area for Tue & Wed.
@DrEmilyFinch Since moving to NZ a few years back I’ve become OBSESSED with eels, they’re so cool. This is my partner feeding the eels at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. We go see them every time we’re there and never miss the eel talk. Ooh, and there are “tame” eels in the river in Chch!
@annamfleming It doesn’t look like copper or zinc mineralisation, but it could contain some. The colour is pretty consistent with weathered mafic/ultramafic rock, maybe also some alteration to chlorite. These rocks are rich in iron and magnesium, with minerals like olivine that weather easily
I didn’t see the possible meteor (although others in the area did), but I did feel the slight rattle from this. No subsequent quake update though, so assumed it was just a big truck or similar. I really must get around to getting that @raspishake !
Some neat Space science today with a possible meteor passing over the lower North Island this afternoon. This was felt by many people on the ground, and picked up by our seismic instruments around Wellington.
🌧️ A river in the sky: an atmospheric river is streaming down toward Aotearoa New Zealand.
The tropical moisture connection is denoted by the purple colours (🟣).
Heavy rain, high river flows, mountain snow & strong winds are all on the cards from tonight through Tuesday... 🧵
I’ve really gotten the hang of the summer in December, January etc. thing since living in NZ, totally happy with that.
I’m yet to accept winter in the middle of the year and suspect I never will. Winter here has nothing on Scotland, but I still hate it…
🌀This #impressive#low pressure system now has a new centre. No longer in the Southern Ocean, it's now located near #Fiordland with central air pressure at 962hPa📉.
⚡️Tonight #Thunderstorms line much of #western#NZ as the main #cold front heads into the #NorthIsland.⛈️
And so begins the first day of winter in NZ (meteorologically speaking). As a Scottish lassie, this is my time to shine and show off the plethora of phrases we have for “my goodness, it’s cold”
Did some caving today. Squeezed along some limestone tunnels, got a wee bit muddy, met some gorgeous cave wētā, saw some huge spiders… All in all an excellent day for a tiny geologist that is normally scared of small spaces and the dark. 10/10, would do again 🦗 🕷
