Former Professor of History at University of Tasmania. Independent electoral candidate for Prosser in May 2024. Founder of Save UTAS Campus (now ‘Save UTAS’).
@swegen31 JLN MPs need to be more easily contactable if they are to enact transparency and accountability as their election promised. That is what the UTAS bill is about so a pity they can’t support it. Jackie herself was on our side when we met her.
@bj_stansfield@TasmanianLabor Yes Labor see that education might give them a wedge advantage with JLN. The Liberal bill makes UTAS more accountable and transparent. This is very much needed.

Great speech by @GregBarns at today’s Save UTAS rally near the uni CBD developments. Should be on both 7 and ABC TV news as their cameras were there #politas
@kevinbonham The blogs https://t.co/6lJUjs862e and Tasfintalk show that developing the campus as a housing estate and relocating the uni in the CBD is financially impossible for UTAS. In fact the uni could run out of money altogether in 2 years. Both reflect meticulous research #politas
@SimonDavisTas@poulton_linda What are the alternative facts? SU has supporters all over the state and internationally. You should read blogs theutaspapers and Tasfintalk for facts about UTAS and why they can’t relocate or redevelop on site. Due to inept management and poor governance they are broke! #politas
@DeanWinterMP SU are fully in favour of renewed STEM facilities on campus but UTAS must learn to be transparent and accountable. They aren’t a private corporation but a public university.
@theutaspapers Exactly. Rumour has it that the Executive Dean has been asked to leave. So they are in good shape to move to the extravagantly refurbished Forestry Building - not!
UTAS is failing Tasmania

In my post, I present tables and graphs derived from data collected and published by the Commonwealth Department of Education.
While there are undoubtedly all sorts of complexities beneath the data, including the impacts of COVID, major trends are clear.
First, there was a significant decline in the percentage of Tasmanian students who enrolled at UTAS in the period 2013 to the end of 2022, with Tasmanians increasingly favouring mainland universities.
Second, the decline in the percentage of Tasmanian students enrolling at UTAS coincided with a large increase in external (on-line) study at UTAS.
Third, the College of Business and Economics (COBE) is in a mess in the Hobart CBD. Enrolments have plummeted among domestic students and external study predominates. I also understand that notionally internal students work on-line where they can, due to the parking issues in the CBD.
None of the blame for this is on staff; rather the mess is entirely due to the VC's obsession with moving the southern campus to the Hobart CBD.
More blog posts on the COBE mess and the VC's bogus $500m STEM proposal are coming soon.
(NB: When I refer to UTAS in my writings I am referring only to the management clique who make the big decisions for the University, not to UTAS staff generally, who continue to do a great job).

Both the Mercury (Mike Foster) and the Australian (Matt Denholm) report on the damning survey results on leadership at UTAS. How do the Chancellor and VC carry on ducking criticism and refusing to properly engage with the media and the community? #politas
Having talked to voters all over south-east Tasmania for six months as a candidate I can say that the stadium issue was of number one concern to them and a basis for how they voted.
