A bit of news - today will be my last official day as Associate Editor of @OPRD_ACS after a fantastic 3 years in the role. After moving to a new role at Merck in mid-2022 that was outside the API space entirely, I felt it made sense to step back after my contract ended.
I owe a huge thanks to EiC Kai Rossen and my Associate Editor peers for making this such a wonderful experience! The OPR&D Managing Editors and staff always made sure I had everything I needed to be successful in the role. My successor will be very lucky to work with them all!
Make no mistake, Maitland Jones’s textbook is a fantastic book, which helped me understand how to see organic reactions from the perspective of molecular orbital theory. Also @PamTadross, you were my chem TA. I still remember studying your review sheets! 😍
Maitland Jones has had a profound impact on generations of organic chemistry students, both through his textbook and his teaching. Firing him won't solve your problem, @nyuniversity. As an alumna, I'm very disappointed.
When I was at NYU, I learned organic chemistry from Maitland Jones before he actually taught there. His book (in my basement, heavily annotated) is one of the reasons I fell in love with organic chemistry. (Also has a few Mets references!) This is a lazy decision, @nyuniversity.

Many themes discussed in the article by the faculty are not limited to NYU. It's really clear from talking to many of you too that the pandemic has been disastrous for learning. Rather than trying to understand why students are struggling and problem solve, they just gave up.
