Today is a great day to point out that the Kansas City Chiefs were founded by Lamar Hunt, son of legendary Texas oilman H.L. Hunt and that the term "Super Bowl" was created by him.

Lamar Hunt was somewhat of a visionary. He worked closely with Bud Adams, a fellow Texan, with both having the goal of bringing professional football to Dallas. With the launch of the AFL in 1961, Hunt became the founder of the Dallas Texans. Adams became owner of the Houston Oilers. Here's an interesting fact: while the eight original founders of the AFL were referred to as the “Foolish Club,” the eight franchises that began the AFL still exist in some form today: Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, New York Titans, Oakland Raiders, Dallas Texans and Houston Oilers. The new AFL was a flashy, upstart challenger to the stolid NFL and eventually so successful that the two leagues merged in 1966.

The naming of the Super Bowl was nearly accidental. Formally, the first championship game was referred to as the “AFL-NFL Championship Game.” However, Hunt had sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle in which he wrote, “I have kiddingly called it the ‘Super Bowl,’ which obviously can be improved upon.” Hunt was wrong about that. The media picked up on the name and used it when talking about the game. By the time of the third Championship Game, the name of “Super Bowl” was the official title.

Later, Hunt would reveal that the name was inspired by his children playing with a toy named “Super Ball.”

I've only touched on a very small portion of Lamar Hunt's life here. He was an interesting character, to say the least.

Mandatory and voluntary evacuations have been issued for several communities near the San Jacinto River. The river is usually 40 to 50 feet above sea level. On Friday, it's expected to reach 78 feet above sea level. That's just 3 feet below where it was during Harvey.
