2 yrs ago when I had surgery for cancer, the lady in the next bed was visited by a hospital administrator she had not met before, not her doctor, who stood at the end of her bed and said she had no option but to have MAID. The woman said “Absolutely not! I plan to get up and dance again”. The administrator then started to argue with her saying she had no choice but MAID without explaining why. The woman said “Well I’ll talk to my family when they come on Monday.” The administrator replied “They’re coming on Monday? Good, I’ll talk to them”. She headed off the family on Monday before they saw her and they came to our room primed to convince her she had to have MAID according to the hospital. She then argued with the family that she didn’t want it. During the day she was firm but at night when they weren’t there she cried. Ultimately they convinced her and started preparing a party for her to say goodbye to all her friends. So sad. And it has made me more skeptical about MAID procedures.

US Parks Police caught two Antifa operatives on camera driving a pickup truck onto the National Mall in the middle of the night and dumping multiple buckets of an extremely aggressive form of algae into the Reflecting Pool.

The pool is now a disgusting green mess, and the damage is already in the millions.USPP Captain Joseph Barron has them in custody. They’re not cooperating yet, but he’s got them dead to rights on film.

Dear Europeans... Buck-ee's is just normal stuff to us. Yeah, sure, it's freakishly big, and has lots of cool stuff.

But "freakishly big and has lots of cool stuff" is also a pretty good way to describe America.

Why?

It's not because we're somehow genetically superior. We come from roughly the same genepool.

And it's not because we somehow looted the third world... you did a lot more empire-building than we ever did.

It's because of the difference between your politics and ours. And between your social mores and ours.

We have what we call a permissive environment.

That means that if someone sees a possibility, wants to solve a problem, comes up with a better way to do something, even something small...

He's encouraged to try.

The government won't make him fill out 67 thousand forms and make him wait five years for permission.

His neighbors won't sneer at him and say he's getting ideas above his station.

Investors will actually want to talk to him, and think seriously about whether they want in on the action.

We know this seems brash and arrogant and reckless to you. We know you think a lot of these ideas are stupid. Some of them are.

But every creative idea, even the best ones, seems really, really dumb when you first come up with it, haven't tried it out, haven't refined it into what it eventually needs to be.

Name any good idea anyone has ever had, and I can describe it the way it might have looked to people of its time, which makes it sound dumb, or wicked, or hopeless, or reckless, or arrogant.

This is why you're poor.

It's not because you suck. You don't suck. But you are micromanaging yourselves and each other out of existence.

BREAKING: The US DOJ just declared Elon Musk's AI data center a national security asset and blocked an environmental lawsuit against it.

The NAACP filed a lawsuit against xAI in April 2026 under the Clean Air Act, alleging the company is operating dozens of gas turbines without the required air permits to power its Colossus 2 data center.

The turbines are located in Southaven, Mississippi, just across the state line from the data center in South Memphis, Tennessee.

Since the lawsuit was filed, the number of turbines has grown from 27 to 57.

xAI says that the turbines are legally exempt from Mississippi air permitting requirements because they are mounted on trailers and classified as temporary mobile equipment.

On Monday, the Department of Justice intervened in the case, filing court papers arguing that shutting down the turbines would “threaten American national, economic, and energy security.”

The DOJ stated that the power supply supports U.S. military AI operations.

Cameron Stanley, the Defense Department’s Chief Digital and AI Officer, submitted a declaration stating that Grok is one of only four AI models currently cleared for mission critical operations across Secret and Top Secret classified government networks, and that it has been used in recent U.S. military operations against Iran.

The DOJ, xAI, and the state of Mississippi are jointly asking the court to dismiss the case.

One time when he went back he left it behind. I just looked at the cover, picked it up and took it to my room.

I was hooked.

Now I'm a published SF author with 56 books with my name on the cover and I still am trying to get as good as Doc Smith.

I was part of a civilian group getting books to troops around 2003. One of the other men in the chat said that troops were asking for us to 'stop sending romance novels.' He was a bit sharp on the subject but right.

One of the Karenish women went off on that. I was very calm on the subject. Said the one time I read a romance novel was on a mountaintop where I'd been for over a month and read every book there at least twice before opening up the romance novel. And I'd never read on since because I'd never been that desperate.

But as soon as women got real power in publishing, they (by and large) stopped publishing for men then asked 'why don't men read?'

Last week, the California Fair Political Practices Commission fined Gavin Newsom $31,500 for failing to timely report more than $5.5 million in behested payments.

“Behested payments” are donations made to charities, nonprofits, or government programs at the request of a public official. While legal in California with no contribution limits, they must be reported to the FPPC. These arrangements create both the appearance and the risk of pay-to-play in that donors who give large sums at an official’s request may later expect favorable treatment such as government contracts or favorable regulations.

Newsom failed to meet this basic transparency requirement. The FPPC emphasized that, given his many years in elected office, he is very familiar with the reporting rules. The commission also noted that his repeated failures demonstrated a pattern of noncompliance.

Newsom has faced criticism for soliciting millions for his wife’s nonprofits, which are now part of the ongoing DOJ investigation. Although these particular behested payments have not been found to violate the law, the FPPC’s repeated findings of noncompliance undercut Newsom’s claim that the federal probe is purely a political witch hunt.
