Global EV sales start the year with 1.1 million units sold in January 2024, growing by 69% y-o-y and falling by 26% m-o-m.

The European market grew by 29% y-o-y, in the USA & Canada by 41%, and in China sales almost doubled.

Sales of EVs in China are operating in an almost pure commercial marker - with limited subsidies - but volumes very high at about 30% of all sales, says @PanayiAdam.

In August 2023, China reached 511,530 BEV sales, eclipsing all other regions combined by more than 100,000 vehicles. Germany had a particularly strong month, reaching 86,161 BEV sales and 44% market share in Europe. This came as the region eliminated commercial subsidies for BEVs on the 1st of September, leading to a significant amount of pre-buying in August to take advantage of the benefit. 

Elsewhere, Norway, Sweden and Israel all saw large m-o-m increases. Meanwhile the UK and Ireland saw the largest m-o-m decreases at 31% and 57% respectively, due to a mix of summer downtime and anticipation in the UK of new registration plates in September.
