🧵 on how DigiYatra, which has been claimed to be voluntary, is now being coerced on passengers at airports. As a next step, we will be writing to @AAI_Official to convey our concerns.

Flying from Delhi to Mumbai & something interesting happened. Two people outside the airports announced, "All domestic passengers this way!" When I reached the specified gate, I was directed to three scanners and asked for my boarding pass to...register for Digiyatra. (1/n)

4. The DPDPB, 2022, like its predecessors, failed to include any provisions which would enable the reform of the surveillance architecture in India. The draft bill should put in place certain protections against overbroad government surveillance. 5/8

Together, these bring the state’s FRT total to SEVEN at a financial outlay of ₹3.34 crores. Other notable projects in WB include those run by the Kolkata Police, @OfficialGRSE, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, & the Kolkata Airport. 4/4

2️⃣ The Public Works Department, Gov’t of West Bengal, published a tender for FRT installation in Kolkata. Again for the purpose of identity authentication, this trend of public sector institutions adopting FRTs is worrying given their unreliability. 3/4
