Remembrance
Detonating artillery shells falling on Dunkirk echoed in the distance. It was late May, 1940, my father was only eleven years old. He was in a small restaurant with my grandfather, the two of them perplexed by the French soldier sitting next to them having a feast. The soldier's meal was lavish, far in excess of what virtually all Europeans were used to in those days of rationing.
My grandfather struck up conversation with the soldier. "Excuse me, but you are using up all your ration coupons on this one meal. What will you eat later if you spend them all like this?
The soldier smiled forlornly and explained, "Tomorrow the Germans will attack."
He would have no further use for his coupons. He had no intention of retreat. This was his last supper.
For that soldier who died protecting my father and all the rest of us. For all the others I could never begin to name or even know of. For all those who stand the wall. Thank you.
@TrpstrLeonOG Employers do not set wages any more than they do prices. Neither do workers. Wages and prices, including rent, are set by the market, by supply and demand. Failure to understand such basic fundamentals leads to grave error, such as the OP's opinion.
@Arcfunmi Who says they aren't? I know Canadian houses are often built to similar insulation standards. If other countries don't, it's likely due to less need or less capital. Quality construction costs more. Can they afford it? Be careful of assuming your value judgments reign supreme.
@neyikaybettik The movie takes place in 1936. At that time, from the 1920s to 1948, the British Mandate for Palestine was typically indicated on maps as Palestine. Prior to that for hundreds of years, it was simply part of the Ottoman empire. There was never a 'Palestinian' people living there.
@IGN Too bad I don't understand the language. And if I am reading the subtitles, I am NOT watching the movie, literally, both meanings.
'Someday' movies will be released with AI dubbing of the dialogue in the original actors' voices and inflections. Maybe I'll see it then.
@BenjaminDEKR Yes, everything should be obvious; everything should have been invented aeons ago. The fact that a human being didn't invent and think of everything decades ago is proof of their incompetence.
Pray tell, give us a list of the amazing things you thought of decades ago. 🙄🤦♂️
@JulieKennis Sadly, we all die. It is the price we pay for birth. Doing so while holding the hand of someone who loves you is a good death. Grieve as needed, but also celebrate his life and the time you shared.
@HolisticFitnes_ I'm old and out of the market. But there was a time when I was a catch, looking good, doing well, and staying single by choice. Women are a lot of work and a lot of trouble, and for what? A prostitute costs less than a date and is more honest. (I've never paid for it, though.)
@otokyo Say hello. Introduce myself. Ask her if I might make her acquaintance. If she declines, I leave her alone. If she is game, I chat flirtatiously but politely and see if we have chemistry.
