I think the main reason is to improve economic connectivity with southern China - same railway tech allows seamless integration into the Chinese HSR network, which means direct mixed passenger and cargo routes from Hải Phòng port and the Bắc Ninh industrial zones to Kunming, Nanning, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, then further into the Chinese interior and even Europe eventually.

The blue Lạng Sơn route in particular is explicitly designed for high-volume freight traffic, since it's the shortest route to Nanning - the grey patch you can see on the upper-right edge of the map.

The orange route is under construction and is optimistically planned for completion in 2030; the blue and purple routes will have their planning finalised by the end of 2026.

@HQuarterma43504 @vnvnvnvnvnv12 That’s more or less exactly what our government is planning: a 160-kph line using Chinese tech for the Lào Cai-Hà Nội-Hải Phòng northern route, with a direct cross-border link to Kunming just like Laos; and a 350-kph line for the 1,500-km long North-South Express.

@Will_apprentice @okaythenfuture VN was also just much poorer 15 years ago. Japan HSR would have costed over 50% of GDP; current plan’s projected 16% is far more viable. Northern semi-high speed route is still being built with Chinese support though, so VN will operate both Chinese and German HSR at same time?
