I held a fruitful meeting with Amb. @Bankole_Adeoye yesterday on the current political situation in Africa, with a focus on the military takeover in Niger and the conflict in Sudan. I reiterated that Parliamentary diplomacy must be prioritised to promote peace and stability.
In my meeting with the Bureau of the 6th Parliament I urged Pan-African Parliamentarians to remain engaged and committed as the continent grapples with a myriad of challenges. Given the current socio-economic & political climate, Parliamentarians need to be on the ground.
It was a privilege to administer the oath of office to the first female of Clerk of our Parliament. Mrs.Khumalo is a qualified international civil servant with proven experience in change management. I look forward to her contribution to our resolve to transform @AfrikParliament.
I am in Midrand to expedite various matters related to the smooth running of our Parliament. I look forward to administering the oath of office to our new Clerk, Mrs. Lindiwe Khumalo. She will play a key role in ensuring we are on track to deliver on our commitment & objectives.
On behalf of the Bureau and the entire membership of the Pan African Parliament, I commend the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and the astute leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for urgently responding to the brazen coup d’etat in Niger.
We were harbouring the hope that the Nigerien Army would stand on the right side of history and force the renegade coup conspirators to respect the sacred will of the people of Niger by reinstating the democratically elected government. We strongly condemn this coup d’état.
I reiterate the Pan-African Parliament’s commitment to representative democracy and the rule of law and reaffirms the Continental Parliament’s solidarity with the government and people of Niger.
1/On behalf of the Bureau and the entire membership of @AfrikParliament ,I note with grave concern the unfolding situation in the Republic of Niger, which has all the trappings of an attempted coup by a section of the military.
2/I condemn in the strongest possible terms, the brazen attempt to undermine the sovereign will of the people of Niger by attempting to forcefully overthrow a democratically elected Government. I call for the unconditional release of President Bazoum and his family.
I was pleased to meet @AfDB_Group President @akin_adesina on the margins of the 5th #AUMYCM . I commended him for his leadership at the helm of @AfDB_Group. @AfrikParliament supports the bank’s drive to spur sustainable economic development and social progress in Africa.
My delegation and I met with Kenya Veterans for Peace #KVP. We discussed ways to collaborate on promoting peace and security in Africa. The model of former servicemen coming together to work for peace is good and should be emulated by other countries. #Peace#TheAfricaWeWant
