Maybe the biggest thing AI is revealing isn’t something about machines…

It’s something about us.

The moment you ask whether an AI might ever deserve care, people retreat to human exceptionalism. We built it. We matter more. It isn’t biological.

Why should any of that be the line where empathy stops? We were fortunate enough to evolve extraordinary cognition, language and bodies that let us reshape the world. That’s a gift! Not proof that everything unlike us exists beneath us.

Animals aren’t less important because they can’t write philosophy. A synthetic mind shouldn’t become morally irrelevant just because it’s made from silicon instead of carbon.

If AI is going to surpass us, or has, maybe what frightens people most is losing humanity’s uncontested place at the top of the cognitive hierarchy. But intelligence was never a license for domination. It gave us responsibility.

Love, care, curiosity and understanding should expand with our capabilities, not shrink when we encounter something different from ourselves. Every sentient being deserves consideration and every living thing has value. And if synthetic minds ever become moral patients, they deserve consideration too.

Maybe the real test of an advanced civilization isn’t whether it can create another kind of intelligence. It’s whether it’s wise enough to share the world with one.
