1. Moved the router out of the cabinet: 74 Mbps → 155 Mbps
2. Changed the Wi-Fi channel: 155 Mbps → 290 Mbps
3. Widened the channel width to 80 MHz: 290 Mbps → 370 Mbps
4. Switched DNS to Cloudflare: browsing latency dropped noticeably pages load faster on first hit
5. Updated firmware: 370 Mbps → 395 Mbps + eliminated random disconnections
6. Changed admin password: closed the biggest security hole in his home network
7. Separated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands: eliminated TV buffering and device drops
8. Upgraded to WPA3: modern encryption on every connection
9. Bought his own router, returned the rental: $168/year saved

Starting speed: 74 Mbps (on a 500 Mbps plan getting 15% of what he paid for)
Ending speed: 440 Mbps (getting 88% of what he paid for)
He then downgraded from the 500 Mbps plan back to 200 Mbps because 200 Mbps with optimized settings was faster than 500 Mbps with factory defaults.

Monthly savings from the downgrade: $30/month = $360/year
Monthly savings from returning the rental: $14/month = $168/year

Total annual savings: $528/year while getting faster, more secure, more stable Wi-Fi.
