Over the next 5 years 99% of the funding to fix the leaks, stop sewage dumping, build infrastructure is NOT being provided by shareholders, it's coming from you and me and everyone else via those recent bill increases. @thameswater recently told me that due to “fiscal constraints”, they can’t afford to fix all of the illegal outfalls on the River Roding by 2030 (already a more than fair deadline in the circumstances I feel).

This single one million pound payment to their finance chief would, alone, be enough to stop a billion litres of raw sewage a year entering the river in Ilford. Which other companies do we allow to commit serious crimes because they’ve taken money that should have been used to ensure their company complies with the law & given it to their execs instead? How long until the government says “no more” to these chancers & puts Thames Water out of its misery?

@CountBinface’s policy of making water company bosses swim in polluted rivers might sound ridiculous, but is actually far more effective as a response to the sewage crisis than anything Reform is proposing.

There are lots of places I could take the bosses of @thameswater to on the River Roding, as we have dozens of completely illegal sewage spills to choose from. I think the ideal spot would have to be the Cran Brook though. It’s convenient to get to: just 15 minutes walk from an Elizabeth Line Station & Ilford town centre where hundreds of thousands of people live & work. But that doesn’t stop Thames Water constantly dumping 750,000,000 litres of raw sewage into the Roding via this brook every single year, whilst refusing to commit to our fair demand to stop all spills by 2030. I guess they might say it’s unsafe to swim in a cocktail of raw shit, cooking fat, toilet tissue & chemicals? But if this water is too unsafe & disgusting for them to touch, surely it’s not safe to discharge into our river?

In trying to be silly, has Binface actually hit upon an eminently sensible policy that most people in Britain would support?

Perhaps the most serious invasive species of all is Japanese Knotweed. This plant is so invasive it can mean that land on which it grows often can’t be sold or mortgaged. It is very hard to get rid of (pretty much the only method that works is spraying it with glyphosate after the plant has flowered), & can only be done by professionals, not volunteers.

Knotweed is spreading out of control on the Roding, with around 100 patches some of which are becoming forests of nothing but knotweed. It’s now threatening key infrastructure like railways & motorway embankments, as well as people’s homes. I can’t think of many tasks that should be a greater priority than controlling knotweed spreading along a river in a major city, but the EA has done nothing & has nor plans to do anything.

So, in my spare time, I walked the river to find, photograph & geolocate every single knotweed patch. I then got funding to pay for removal & the amazing charity @ProtectEarthUK agreed to do the work at a discount rate. The first spraying took place last autumn & many of the largest patches are much reduced. It will probably take 5-10 years to eliminate all the knotweed, but unlike the EA I’m determined to do what needs to be done to ensure we remove this plant from my river.

Working in Parliament, you quickly realise there are thousands upon thousands of people like Paul all over the country, willing and able to do something to preserve their little patch of our green and pleasant land, but they are routinely blocked, persecuted, and crushed by local government and arms length bodies like the Environment Agency.

People who want to spend their own time and money to fill in potholes, remove graffiti, or clean their local rivers - to be good conscientious citizens. Instead of being rewarded, they are chided and criticised.

I’m sorry, this is total bollocks. I have been looking after my river for a decade and you have done absolutely nothing to support me and the other hundreds of volunteers who give up their free time to do your job for you and to stop the river we love from dying.

This picture is the part of the Aldersbrook that we haven’t yet restored. Do you agree that allowing one of the ancient rivers of London to disappear beneath a layer of sewage, silt, rubbish & knotweed is a disgrace? If so, when can we expect EA teams down in the river to sort it out?

We’re being told that Nigel Farage was given 5 million quid when he was holding NO public office, and had no intention of doing so again, by some random crypto-billionaire living in Thailand and for Nige’s ‘lifelong’ protection.
But, within months, he then becomes MP for Clacton and, other than standing on the ‘anti-immigrant platform, he also secretly holds a positive attitude towards cryptocurrencies and a willingness to further legitimise them.
