The Thabo Mbeki Foundation joins the world in mourning the passing of our beloved maestro, Abdullah Ibrahim, who has taken his place among the ancestors.
He gave our liberation its sound and served as an anchor of African cosmologies. His tireless dedication to the spiritual reawakening and renaissance of our continent will echo in the African wind forever.

"The dead are not dead."
In this video, President Thabo Mbeki shares a powerful story about Soga’s Pan-African vision. He recounts how Soga responded to a 19th-century missionary who claimed Africans were a "perishing" people for refusing to convert. Soga rejected this narrow view, looking instead at the strength of Africans across the globe—from the Americas and the Caribbean to the continent itself. He argued that Africans, as a global diaspora, were not perishing but were part of a unified, resilient whole.

"In 1915 on the site of an old fort at Alice in the eastern Cape—a relic of the frontier wars of the previous century—the South African Native College, to give it its first title, was opened. The main sponsors were missionary churches in South Africa and African leaders, but the recently formed Union Government gave cautious moral and material support. General Botha, the first prime minister of the Union, came personally to declare it open. This College was the first of its standard for non-Europeans races in Africa south of the equator."
Oliver Tambo arrives in Tanganyika to begin the external mission of Congress, 1960. Following the Sharpeville massacre and the banning of the ANC, PAC and other liberation movements, Congress instructed Tambo to leave South Africa to set up a foreign headquarters, mobilize international opposition to apartheid, and manage operations in exile.
