The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists has launched its series of district expos across South Africa.
These events are aimed at increasing student participation and improve the quality of research projects before the regional science fairs begin in July. They’re the first stage for participants.
“I also, like to refer to Bloemfontein region as the genius incubator. We do get a lot of good projects from our region,” said Bloemfontein regional science fair director Renier Watson. “I always like to tell the learners that we prefer too simple projects because learners tend to think too big, something that is not always viable.”

The global wildlife trade, especially in illegal and live-animal markets, is fueling the spread of diseases from animals to humans, according to a new study in Science.
The findings show that traded mammals are more than 40% more likely to harbor human-infecting pathogens, with species accumulating more shared pathogens the longer they remain in the trade.

Often labeled “the world’s most dangerous birds,” cassowaries just got even more intriguing.
The aggressive, flightless birds have structures on top of their heads called casques, the purpose of which has long confused scientists.
To the human eye, casques look fairly plain, but new research finds this headgear fluoresces under ultraviolet light, possibly aiding the birds’ visual displays.
