"Most of them are cases of amputation or head injuries."
Dr. Muhammad Al Rann, head of ER at the Indonesian Hospital describing injuries from Jabalia massacre. #Gaza

Medicine #FooledbyRandomness DuJour:
The heuristic 220 minus age for max heart rate is UNUSABLE. One of those stochastic measures deemed deterministic. It explains <20% of the variations!
See my video on misusing the law of large numbers going from the general to the particular.
I had a really busy clinic today and as usual I estimate that >80% of people I saw did NOT have the classic clear or consistent signs or symptoms that we get taught to assess for to make a diagnosis
Instead many had unusual pain descriptions, locations, aggs and eases, with inconsistent patterns and behaviours!
And in my 20+ years of experience working in MSK this is common and normal yet it is rarely spoken about let alone taught how to deal with!
And we wonder why uncertainty is so poorly managed and tolerated in healthcare and why over diagnosis and treatment is rife!
We all need to be better at discussing and highlighting how rarely humans present clearly and classically, and how there is a lot of uncertainty a lot of the time and thats perfectly normal and ok!

Pure thuggery. Fair play to the composure of the Gardai in the face of such aggression.
Miriam Lord: Forget gallows humour, this was a depressing day as dangerously emboldened thugs descended on the Dáil

Six fundamental beliefs that bias our view of the world:
1. My experience is a reasonable reference.
2. I make correct assessments of the world.
3. I am good.
4. My group is a reasonable reference.
5. My group is good.
6. People's attributes (not context) shape outcomes.
Congrats to Team Eire making it to the final @EuropSocEM simwars 2023 & very well done to the winning team from Belgium! Thanks to the organisers of this fantastic #simulation competition, we had a great time & will definitely be back next year!
Who am I to dictate what she wants to do with her own life and body in the cold clear light of day?
Knowing she could choose when to die was my wife’s escape valve. I’m glad she could do so legally

I spoke to a patient support group last night & there is just no substitute for embodied experience
It’s the difference in flight from a pilot to a bird
The pilot may understand all the physics of lift, weight, thrust, & drag but the bird truly knows what it feels like to fly
