In the early 2000s, the idiosyncratic Albany project Self Defense Family emerged from the ashes of the hardcore band End Of The Year. The revolving-lineup collective functioned as a de facto solo project for sole permanent member Patrick Kindlon, who would later lead Drug Church. Self Defense Family, who’d been inactive while Drug Church took off, have now released their first song in six years.

“Reclusion” is a clanging post-hardcore groove that recalls Kindlon’s beloved Lungfish. He bellows poetic lyrics about being drawn in by “a voice in the woods” and making a new life “far away from the screams.” (These days, Kindlon lives in Australia with his wife.) The track sounds nothing like Drug Church, and Kindlon’s voice is just as galvanizing in this context.

Self Defense Family will also play some rare live shows over the next month — a pair with their peers in Fiddlehead and one in Chicago with reunited Philadelphia heroes Ink & Dagger.
