🌍 Africa has the highest number of noma cases - a devastating oral disease that causes severe tissue decay and facial disfigurement.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
💡 Noma is preventable.
⚕️It is also treatable if detected early.
@WHO is working with partners to support a more integrated and people-centred approach to tackle noma and other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
🎉 Congratulations #Niger for eliminating Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, the first country in the African Region to do so.
Niger joins 4 other countries that have been verified by WHO for eliminating river blindness, all in the Region of the Americas:
🙌🏽 Colombia (2013)
🙌🏽 Ecuador (2014)
🙌🏽 Guatemala (2016)
🙌🏽 Mexico (2015)
Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease and is the second leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, after trachoma.
It is transmitted to humans through the bites of infective black flies, primarily found in riverine areas. The disease primarily affects rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa and Yemen, with smaller endemic areas found in parts of Latin America https://t.co/4C2tfVqesC
