The UPA kept fuel prices artificially low by issuing ₹1.48 lakh crore in oil bonds, pushing today’s burden onto tomorrow.

🔹 ₹1.48 lakh crore in oil bonds issued between 2005–10
🔹 Nearly ₹3 lakh crore eventually paid in principal + interest
🔹 ₹37,000 crore paid in FY 2025–26
🔹 Final payment made on 29 March 2026, closing the two-decade-old liability

The UPA didn’t make fuel cheaper. It 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫��𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭—leaving taxpayers to foot the bill years later.

That’s the real cost of reckless fiscal politics: weaken the economy today, hide the bill for tomorrow. The Modi government inherited the liability, honoured the commitments, and finally cleared the last of the UPA-era oil bonds.
