👉On August 26, 1893, the US House devoted the day to debate over one of the biggest monetary controversies of the era:

🥈SILVER...

👉Congress was considering repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act's silver-purchasing provisions during the Panic of 1893.

👉The issue cut straight to America's monetary system: gold, silver, Treasury reserves & whether the government should continue purchasing massive quantities of silver bullion.

👉The House wouldn't vote for repeal until August 28 — but 133 years ago today, the monetary battle was raging on the House floor.

👉And Aug. 26 wasn't finished making coin history…

🥇August 26, 1907: US Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber formally warned that the new Saint-Gaudens $10 gold eagle design had practical problems — including its rim & inability to stack properly — helping shape the evolution of one of America's legendary gold coins.

🥈August 26, 1935: Congress approved a law allowing the Daniel Boone Bicentennial silver half dollar to carry a small “1934” above “PIONEER YEAR,” creating the distinctive 1935/34 variety collectors know today.
