While Paris, Brussels, London and Berlin light up with rising street crime, open drug markets and regular violence, Minsk offers a different picture: wide illuminated avenues, orderly traffic, clean sidewalks and a noticeable calm after sunset.
Official 2025 data shows Minsk (around 2 million people) recorded roughly 15,500 crimes — about 770 per 100,000 inhabitants. That includes only 24 murders or attempted murders combined, around 2,250 thefts and just over 1,000 drug-related offences. Recorded crime has fallen sharply over the past decade. Belarus as a whole reported its lowest crime figures in nearly 30 years in 2024.
For comparison, many large Western capitals report far higher rates of robbery, street theft and violent incidents. Perception surveys still rate Minsk lower on “feeling safe” than Warsaw or Prague — mostly because of concerns about the state and corruption, not random street attacks.
The streets of Minsk remain relatively free of the daily disorder now common in parts of Western Europe. The bigger risk here is not the person walking behind you at night. It is the political system.
Tonight the lights are on, the avenues are quiet, and another Slavic capital simply functions without the chaos.
