A 75-year-old white politician nicknamed "gogo", meaning grandmother, is running for mayor of Johannesburg in a high-stakes November race that analysts say could reshape South Africa's politics. https://t.co/ksditM2DzA
@Al42401Albert@darren_olivier I had an opportunity to visit the home of the Gripen in Sweden not so long. I concur with you. By the way the Test pilot from Sweden was at the AAD2026 I’m hoping that he must have had a good chat with our chaps. Big up to SAAF!!!
Burkina Faso inaugurated its first-ever gold refinery, with President Ibrahim Traore saying the country wanted to process its mineral resources locally and take control of the entire value chain
Russia has directly challenged the United States over its exclusion of South Africa from the G20, arguing Washington had no authority to shut a full member out of the grouping. https://t.co/5sn5gjSVMV
Iran President Pezeshkian at the UN:
"Those who are terrorists and train terrorists tell us that we are terrorists."
"For two hundred years, Iran has not attacked any country. For two hundred years, we have always defended ourselves."
"They bombed and killed these children, with weapons supplied by America and Israel. They were guilty of nothing. They had committed no crime."
"In Gaza, they murdered more than eighty thousand innocent people."
"Then they say others are terrorists, these are the ones causing instability -- are we the ones causing instability?"
"Anyone they want to destroy, they label a terrorist."
"Palestine remains a wound on the body of the conscience of the international community, and Gaza remains a symbol of the failure of international mechanisms to prevent the suffering of civilians."
"Israel murders thousands of people in Gaza every week. But Iran was bombed while at the negotiating table."
"Yet Israel receives billions of dollars in free weapons as a reward, and it is licensed to bomb any capital it wishes."
"The nuclear bombs are in Israel, but the inspectors are in Iran. Israel kills, yet Iran is sanctioned, and this is a tragedy that would make anyone you tell laugh."
"We must not build a world in which military power replaces legitimacy, sanctions replace diplomacy, terror replaces politics, and war replaces dialogue."
"We have found our answer. We need power. Because a nation that cannot defend itself, they crush it in this world."
"Let him know: the Iranian nation, in the face of force, will not bow its head, and will make the aggressors regret it."
On March 16, 1968, US troops were raping and massacring Vietnamese civilians including children and babies at My Lai.
Then an American helicopter pilot named Hugh Thompson Jr. saw what was happening — and decided he could not stand by.
Thompson was flying a reconnaissance mission in an OH-23 Raven with his two crewmen, Glenn Andreotta and Lawrence Colburn. Their job was to scout ahead of the ground troops and identify enemy positions.
But something was terribly wrong.
From the air, Thompson noticed bodies everywhere — women, children, infants and elderly people. There was virtually no return fire.
He marked wounded civilians with smoke so they could receive medical help.
But when he came back, he discovered that some of the people he had marked as wounded had been shot dead.
He watched a wounded Vietnamese woman lying on the ground. An American soldier approached her, prodded her with his foot — and shot her in the head.
Thompson was horrified.
He then saw a group of 12–15 Vietnamese women and children fleeing toward a bunker while American soldiers pursued them.
He landed his helicopter between the civilians and the soldiers.
Thompson confronted the Americans and ordered his crew to cover the civilians. He told his gunner, Lawrence Colburn, to train his M60 on the American troops and fire if they opened fire on the Vietnamese.
Think about that.
An American soldier had reached the point where he was willing to risk shooting fellow American soldiers to prevent them from committing more war crimes.
Thompson then helped get the civilians out of the bunker and called in other helicopters to evacuate them.
His crew helped rescue Vietnamese survivors and wounded children.
After returning to base, Thompson immediately reported what he had witnessed to his superiors.
Hugh and his men deserve to be remembered, not because they were American soldiers, but because they chose humanity when others had abandoned it.
While others were killing innocent people, these three Americans risked their lives to save them.
That is courage. That is humanity. This is Thompson Hugh Jr.
@pmcafrica Only for some arrogant @Treasury_RSA official to tell us that this is not a national priority to fund.
Whereas the boost to national confidence is palpable & needed under the circumstances. 🇿🇦

Due to tactical circumstances, it got stuck in the mud of a shona near the Lomba River during a tank fight, and was destroyed at close range by a T55 tank. The crew as well as 32 Bn members were killed instantly. The tank round penetrated through the side door, detonated in the main ammunition storage container and resulted in an explosion causing the vehicle to catch fire. Later it was destroyed by own forces.
Excerpt from the book "War in Angola" by Helmoed - Romer Heitman:
The ratel-90 troop had some difficulty in moving through the objective, and two of the Ratels fell foul of some trenches. A third was attempting to pull one of them out, when a number of tanks appeared from their front. The troop leader, lieutenant Alves, had just reported the tanks when he was shot in the neck by a sniper and died. The troop sergeant came on the air, but then his Ratel fell into one of the deep trenches, and communications were broken off when it was abandoned. The third Ratel now took over from its unhappy position stuck in a trench. Lt Alves' driver, startled when his commander was hit, inadvertently drove into a small shona and solidly mired his Ratel. The entire troop was now immobilized in the face of the very aggressively handled tanks....
