The Director General also conducted site visits to leading pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Egypt, including Gypto Pharma, Minapharm Pharmaceuticals, and Utopia Pharm.
The visits provided valuable insights into advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and innovative technologies that support the production of safe, effective, and high-quality medicines.
These engagements reaffirm Rwanda FDA’s commitment to advancing pharmaceutical security and regulatory excellence, while supporting Rwanda’s vision of transitioning from a medicine-importing nation to a regional hub for pharmaceutical production.
On the sidelines of the Africa Health ExCon 2026, the Director General engaged with Board Members of the Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industry, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and industry leaders to strengthen collaboration and explore opportunities for local manufacturing in Rwanda.
This week, the Director General of Rwanda FDA, Prof. @emilebienvenu, participated in the African Health Exhibition and Conference (#AfricaHealthExCon2026) in Egypt and held a series of engagements aimed at strengthening regulatory cooperation and advancing pharmaceutical development.
During the visit, the Director General held bilateral discussions with Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), on priority areas for implementing the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Rwanda FDA and EDA in August 2024, as well as the Joint Recognition Framework for Medicines signed in January 2026.
The visit also included a tour of EDA laboratories to gain insights into regulatory and quality control systems and explore opportunities for enhanced technical collaboration.
The next Community of Practice webinar is led by its academic lead, Dr @aeolagunju

@WHO alert: #falsified JAKAVI (#ruxolitinib) found in Iran, Russia, Turkey. This is criminal, and may pose significant risks to #patient health. But also lack of access do: people in need should have #access to #cancer medicines via #HealthSystems

Our 'Manufacturing capability' goal is to facilitate development and manufacture of LATs globally focusing on LMICs.
We will:
- Assess CMO capability
- Identify stakeholders with capabilities to manufacture LATs
- Establish an open access resource.

President Kagame also welcomed Hon. Shirley Botchwey, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth @SGCommonwealth, who is in Rwanda on a working visit. They held constructive discussions on strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and the Commonwealth, and the forthcoming CHOGM 2026.
Innovation in medicines without access cannot fulfil its promise. Access without innovation cannot meet future needs. We need both.
This was my key message today as I welcomed partners to the Access to Novel Medicines Platform (NMP) Stakeholder Meeting at UN City in Copenhagen.
Endorsed by all WHO/Europe Member States, the NMP has become a unique space for trust, solidarity and practical cooperation.
This progress has been possible because Member States and partners have invested leadership, expertise and trust. But looking ahead, we need sustained support. If we believe that collaborative approaches are part of the solution to access challenges, then we must be prepared to continue investing in them.
My sincere thanks to all those contributing to the Platform, and especially to the Austrian National Public Health Institute, GÖG, for its generous support to the Platform and its Secretariat.
One concrete outcome of this work is a new WHO/Europe policy framework on managed entry agreements. It can help countries navigate difficult decisions on high-cost medicines while keeping access, transparency and sustainability in focus: https://t.co/3d27waJghb
