Our Motorcycle Unit is in Washington, DC for Police Week, providing escorts for the families of fallen officers. The included video shows them departing Regan National Airport with Texas State Troopers and Arizona State Troopers on one of many escorts to the host hotels.
Members of our motorcycle section traveled to Albany yesterday with other members from our department and from across the state to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty. May we never forget them.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. We encourage motorists to drive safely, stay focused on the road, limit distractions and look twice before entering into traffic. Motorcyclists should ride safely and defensively and be alert for distracted drivers.
Members of our Motorcycle Unit were on hand to lead the Miller Place - Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Parade this afternoon. The motorcycles then assisted precinct units, easily navigating the parade route and large crowds, ensuring the safety of those in attendance.

Motor Carrier Safety Section conducted a commercial motor vehicle checkpoint with NYS Department of Transportation, and SC Department of Labor, Licensing & Consumer Affairs Weights & Measures Unit. 10 home heating fuel trucks were inspected, resulting in seven violations.
PO Frank Cataldo was driving to the 1st Precinct on 11/3/71 when he saw a crash on the Sunrise Hwy Svce Road in West Islip. PO Cataldo pulled his car partially onto the sidewalk. A truck hit PO Cataldo’s car, fatally injuring him. PO Cataldo was survived by his wife & 5 children
Last night our officers assisted in the dignified transfer of remains of Army Sgt. Bernard J. Sweeney Jr. from JFK to Wading River. Sgt. Sweeney went MIA in 1944 during WWII. His remains were recently identified. Read about his amazing journey home.

Last week, the SCPD said goodbye to Officer Robert Kirwan, who died of 9/11-related cancer on September 9.
Kirwan joined the PD in 1975 and was assigned to the Emergency Service Section in 1979. He responded to the aftermath 9/11, spending more than 30 days on a recovery team.
